Team B.A.A. Performs Well at New Bedford Half Marathon

B.A.A. Men’s Open and Masters Repeat as Team Champions at New Bedford Half Marathon, B.A.A. Women Place Runner-Up in Close Team Battle for First, and Brad Mish (pictured above – credit: Scott Mason) leads the B.A.A. Men’s Open Team to Victory with a Top Ten Finish

Coming off a top ten finish in a fast race at the USATF-NE 5K Championships just two weeks earlier, Brad Mish showed his range of racing strength with a 7th place finish at the New Bedford Half Marathon.  Brad finished in 1:07:34 leading the B.A.A. Men’s Open team to a win over the Central Mass Striders. Also fresh off the 5K, Peter Gilmore scored next for the B.A.A. men with an 18th place finish in 1:09:17 followed closely by Dan Smith in 21st place in 1:09:45. David Bedoya and Jason Reilly were the 4th and 5th team scorers for the men in 1:10:06/24th and 1:11:32/30th. After two early season races, the B.A.A. Men’s Open team is tied with CMS in the USATF-NE Grand Prix Team Championships.

The B.A.A. Women’s Open team improved on their 6th place finish at the 5k Championships with a 2nd place finish in New Bedford in a close team race with Greater Boston Track Club edging out the B.A.A. women by just 36 seconds to take the team title and the overall lead in the USATF-NE Team Championships. Emma Spencer set a new personal best leading the B.A.A. women with a 7th place finish in the women’s race in a time of 1:21:33. Emma ran six minutes faster than her 2015 race in New Bedford and is primed for a good race at the Boston Marathon in April. New B.A.A. club member Rachel Coogan also had a big personal best race with an 11th place finish in 1:22:46. Rachel will also toe the line in Hopkinton in a few weeks looking to lower her marathon best. Ravenna Neville returned to racing with the B.A.A. after some time off. Ravenna placed 16th overall in 1:23:54 followed by age group ace Mimi Fallon in 1:25:15 in 23rd place and Amanda Watters in 1:26:03 in 28th. Mimi also won the 50+ age category.

In the Men’s Masters race, the B.A.A. men dominated their rival CMS in the team scoring with a winning margin of nearly 14 minutes. Chris Magill led the team with a 40th place finish in 1:12:54 and winning the Masters individual title followed by Ryan McCalmon in 46th place in 1:13:13. Ryan recently turned 40 and will be a key team scorer for the Men’s Masters team at the Boston Marathon in a few weeks. Stalwart performer Peter Hammer was next in for the B.A.A. in 1:13:30 for 54th place overall with Harry Stants in 1:14:24/69th and Pat Callahan in 1:16:31/96th to round out the team scoring for the B.A.A. Men’s Masters team.  The Men’s Seniors team landed in 3rd place overall led by David Consigli in 1:22:40 placing 199th overall. Jamie Wilson was the runner-up finisher in the 60+ age category finishing in 1:31:01.

On a typical windy first day of spring in New Bedford, the B.A.A. showed their distance strength and team depth with over fifty club members finishing the race, many in their final weeks of training for the 120th Boston Marathon in April. Congrats to all of those who competed in the Half Marathon!
