B.A.A. Wins Team Titles at 15th Annual B.A.A. Half Marathon

Eric Ashe and Brian Harvey lead the team with a pair of top ten performances.

The 15th annual B.A.A. Half Marathon, presented by Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Jimmy Fund, proved to be a successful day for the B.A.A. Running Club team with a pair of top ten finishes in the men’s race and first place finishes in the team competitions. Kenyan’s Daniel Salel and Mary Wacera returned to Boston to take the men’s and women’s B.A.A. Half Marathon titles. Salel, the 2015 B.A.A. 10K champion, won the race in 1:00:58 and claimed the 2015 B.A.A. Distance Medley crown. Mary Wacera, who also won the B.A.A. 10K in June, was the women’s champion in 1:10:21 and won the women’s Distance Medley title.

ashe_harvey_2For the B.A.A., Eric Ashe (seen far left in above image – credit: Phtotorun.net) was in a close race with Ethiopian Raji Assefa in the final miles and just a few strides ahead when he entered White Stadium. In a sprint to the finish, Eric held his position to place 4th overall and was the first American in 1:05:48. Eric’s training partner and teammate Brian Harvey (second from left in above image) was next to enter the stadium in 6th place finishing in 1:06:08. Chris Benestad was the third B.A.A. runner to finish in 1:16:20 placing 21st overall, and rounding out the team scoring was Matt Simonson and Chris George. The B.A.A. Men repeated as team champions, as did the B.A.A. Men’s Masters led by Paul Davies in 71st overall in 1:23:03. He was followed by scorers Wayne Levy (1:25:13), Paul Morrison (1:29:04) and Brian Foley (1:29:51). The men’s Veterans team placed second.

In the women’s race, Ellen Callahan was the top B.A.A. runner placing 13th with Amanda Watters just a few seconds back in 14th. It was Ellen’s debut half marathon and she finished in 1:26:05, while Amanda scored a new PR by almost 2 minutes in 1:26:13. The third B.A.A. woman to finish was Amanda Potter in 1:29:29. The B.A.A. women also placed first overall in the team competition.

Winning Age-Group titles were Chris Benestad in the 35-39 category and Jamie Wilson in the 60-64 division.

A total of 22 B.A.A. Running Club members competed in the B.A.A. Half Marathon on Sunday.
