B.A.A. Track Athletes Hit Their Stride at the BU David Hemery Valentine’s Invitational Track Meet

B.A.A.’s Matt Fischer dips under 14 minutes in the 5000m on Saturday setting a new personal best.

In early December, B.A.A.’s Matt Fischer flirted with the sub-14 minute mark in the 5000 meter race at the BU Season Opener narrowly missing the mark in 14:02.45. On Saturday night again at the BU indoor track, Fischer set his sights on the sub-14 minute mark in a field of talented collegiate and club athletes including Louis Serafini from the Heartbreakers. It was Serafini who took the lead and the win finishing just three seconds ahead of Fischer. Both athletes to dip under the 14 minute mark with Fischer hitting 13:57.75 for a new personal best. With speed under his belt and the indoor season wrapping up, Fischer now sets his sights on the marathon distance as he prepares for the Boston Marathon in April.

In the Mile, B.A.A.’s Guillaume Adam made another attempt to lower his personal best and to run under 4 minutes in his quest to qualify for the 1500m at the European Indoor T&F Championships. Adam needed a 3:58.00 mile to qualify for the meet, equivalent to 3:40.50 1500m mark. At the BU meet on Saturday, despite winning the Mile by a second and setting a new personal best, Adam was just off the mark finishing in 3:58.38. Adam will make a final attempt to qualify at the Ocean Breeze Grand Prix on Staten Island on February 19th. He will be joined in the Mile with B.A.A.’s Daniel Winn and Matt Hillenbrand.

The B.A.A. had several other athletes posting good race times at the BU Valentine meet. In the women’s mile, Emily Lipari ran 4:37.17 and Emma Spencer ran a 9:48.67 in the 3000 meter race. Two B.A.A. women competed in the 5000m with Katie Matthews returning to fitness after an injury that sidelined for much of the 2016 season. Matthews finished second overall in 16:07.66 while B.A.A.’s Rachel Hyland competed well finishing in 16:36.74.

The B.A.A. men competed in distances from the 800m up to the 5000m. Connor Reck ran a good half mile race in 1:51.67 and Christian Harrison moved up in distance to compete in the 1000m finishing in 2:24.16. In his debut race as a Unicorn, B.A.A.’s Matt Hillenbrand competed in the 3000m event finishing in 8:14.47. In addition to Matt Fischer, Brad Mish and Dan Harper competed in the5000m with Mish finishing in 14:44.34 followed by Harper in 14:49.17.
