B.A.A. Teams Top the Field at USATF-NE 15K Championships

Rachel Coogan wins the USATF-NE 15K Championships to lead the B.A.A. women to the team title.

With just over two weeks until the 123rd Boston Marathon, the Frank Nealon Boston Tune-Up 15K in Upton, MA was a final prep race for many of the Unicorns. Falling on the heels of the New Bedford Half Marathon two weeks prior, the USATF-NE 15K championships was the second race in the Grand Prix Road Race series. Once again the B.A.A. showed up in force with over 40 Running Club members competing on a perfect early spring day. In a repeat performance from two weeks earlier, the B.A.A. Men’s Open, Women’s Open and Women’s Masters won the team titles with the Men’s Masters placing third again.

Leading from the gun, Rachel Coogan ran away from the field to win her first USATF New England individual title finishing in 55:08. After a four minute PB at the New Bedford Half Marathon, Rachel looks to continue her streak of new personal bests on Marathon Monday. The B.A.A. women placed four in the Top Ten to dominate the team competition with Karolyn Bowley finishing 4th place overall in 57:03. Bowley was the top Female Master. Hannah Rowe was next in for the B.A.A. women in 6th place in 57:39 with Kaela O’Neil in 10th place in 58:26 for the second Master and first in the 40+ division. Emily Raymond, a three time winner of the 15k race, placed 11th overall in 58:35 to close out the team scoring for the B.A.A. women. With two B.A.A. Masters women in the top ten places, it was Kate Santoro securing the win for the B.A.A. Masters women’s team finishing in 64:13. The B.A.A. Women’s Open and Masters teams are now top of the leaderboard for the USATF-NE Grand Prix Road Race Series.

The Men’s race quickly became a pack of three upfront with B.A.A. duo Jonas Hampton and Eric Ashe setting a quick pace along with John Busque of CT. At the finish line, it was Busque for the win in 47:10 with Hampton in 2nd in 47:15 and Ashe in 3rd in 47:18. Similar to the B.A.A. women, the men placed four in the Top Ten to easily win the team title. Christopher Allen was 5th overall for the B.A.A. finishing in 48:43 with Peter Gilmore in 9thh place in 49:12. Phil Royer was the final team scorer for the B.A.A. placing 26th overall in 51:24. The B.A.A. Men look to stay on top of the team standings as they look ahead to the USATF-NE 5k Championships on May 18th.

David Bedoya led the B.A.A. Masters Men’s team to a third place team finish. Bedoya placed 28th overall and 2nd in the Masters division in 51:33. Bedoya won the Masters race at the New Bedford Half Marathon just two weeks earlier and now has his sights set on the USATF Masters 10K Championships at the James Joyce Ramble in late April. Andy Gardiner used the 15k as a tune-up for the Boston Marathon placing 1st in the Senior 50+ category and was the second B.A.A. Masters finisher across the line in 35th overall in 51:49. Chris Georgules placed 50th overall in 53:28 with Matt Carter in 57th in 53:51 and Michael Paulin 100th in 57:06 to close out the scoring for the Masters men.

Andy Gardiner also led the B.A.A. Seniors team scoring. Wayne Levy finished next for the B.A.A. Senior team in 124th overall in 58:35 followed by David Consigli (175th/61:13), Jon Schoenberg (244th/66:38) and Kyle Bowers (289th/70:10). The B.A.A. Seniors Team placed 6th overall. Harry Carter was first in the 80+ division finishing in 91:57.
