The 41st New Bedford Half Marathon kicked off the 2018 racing season for the B.A.A. Running Club marking the 14th consecutive year that the race has hosted the USATF-New England Half Marathon Championships. With many of the B.A.A. runners using the half marathon distance as a tune-up for the Boston Marathon in April, 38 club members competed in the race posting good individual times and some top team performances on a very traditional cold and windy day in New Bedford adding to the challenge. With a strong headwind greeting runners in the opening miles and again in the final 5K, the B.A.A. runners showed their strength and endurance training by posting some good times on a less than perfect day for running fast.

Lauren Philbrook (pictured left) led the B.A.A. women’s team to a close runner-up finish just behind The Heartbreakers running club. Philbrook finished in 4th overall for the women in 1:17:18. B.A.A.’s Rachel Hyland placed 7th overall for the women in 1:19 flat with Kaela O’Neil netting a new personal best in 1:19:37 and 8th overall to finish the team scoring. In her debut half marathon, Charlotte Walmsley finished in 1:21:09 with Lindsay Willard next in for the B.A.A. women in 1:22:12 followed by Rose Penfold in 1:23:01. New B.A.A. Running Club member Ashley Busa finished close behind in 1:23:20.  The B.A.A. Men’s Open team may not have scored high in the team competition for the first race of the season but did post some good individual performances with the club preparing for the marathon in a few weeks. Peter Gilmore led the B.A.A. men’s team scoring placing 25th overall in 1:11:43. Also scoring for the B.A.A. men were Roger Donaghy placing 39th overall 1:13:12 and Jason Reilly in 65th in 1:14:42. The B.A.A. Men’s Open team placed 7th overall in the team scoring and look to move up in the USATF-NE Grand Prix Road Race standings during the season.

The B.A.A. Men’s Masters took top honors in the team competition with a first place finish nearly 12 minutes ahead of runner-up Dirigo RC of Maine and in front of Central Mass Strides in third. The B.A.A.  Masters were led by David Bedoya (pictured right) finishing in 32nd place overall and first place Master in 1:12:30. New to the Masters category, Ian Nurse was next in for the B.A.A. Masters placing 63rd overall and 3rd Master with a time of 1:14:37. Peter Hammer continues his dominance in the Senior division finishing in 1:14:44 and first in the 50+ category to support the B.A.A. Masters team. Matt Herman was 4th for the B.A.A. Masters men in 1:15:41 and 78th overall with Patrick Callahan finishing the team scoring place 105th overall in 1:17:23. In the women’s Masters category, Pam Manley finished in 1:27:26 and 7th in the Masters division. The Men’s Senior team led by Peter Hammer placed 2nd overall just behind Central Mass Striders with Wayne Levy (1:20:55/167th), Paul Davies (1:24:56/241st), David Consigli (1:25:15/247th) and Andy MacDonald (1:29:14/331st) all scoring for the team.

Next up for the team will be the second race in the USATF-NE Grand Prix road race series in Upton, MA at the Frank Nealon Boston Tune-up 15K on Saturday, March 31st before the team looks ahead to the B.A.A. Boston Marathon weekend races.
