Matt Fischer led the B.A.A. men’s team to victory with a runner-up finish

Matt Fischer led the B.A.A. Men’s Open team to victory with a runner-up finish at the New England Cross Country Championships at Franklin Park on Sunday, November 8. Matt, along with teammates Eric Ashe and Brian Harvey, shared the pacing duties in the lead pack with one other competitor, Henry Sterling from the NE Distance Project. In the final half mile, Sterling pulled away to win the race in 30:16 with the B.A.A. trio in hot pursuit all the way to the finish. Fischer finished in second just 6 seconds back in 30:22, with Ashe placing third in 30:26 and Harvey fourth in 30:33. Sam Alexander and Bo Waggoner were the fourth and fifth scorers for the B.A.A., securing the team victory thanks to 16th and 17th place finishes (31:57 and 31:58, respectively). Also contributing to the team were David Chorney in 20th place (32:11) and Michael Reher in 21st place (32:13). The B.A.A. Men outscored New Balance Boston 27 to 38 to win the team title. The B.A.A. has won the New England Cross Country Championship Men’s team title every year since 2006.
The B.A.A. Masters Men successfully defended their team title over rival Central Mass Striders, with three finishers in the top four overall. The B.A.A.’s Chris Magill continued to rack up individual USATF-NE titles this season by winning the Master’s 8K race in 26:47 just ahead of teammate Peter Hammer (26:49). Close behind in fourth place was the B.A.A.’s Harry Stants finishing in 27:00, with James Callaghan placing 13th in 27:49 and Keven O’Neil 15th in 28:00. Wayne Levy scored for both the Men’s Masters and the Senior teams while winning the 50+ category finishing in 17th overall in 28:05. The B.A.A. Senior team placed fourth overall.
In the Women’s Championship 6K race, Kaela O’Neil led the B.A.A. to a third place podium finish thanks to her 13th place showing in 22:02. Emily D’Addario followed in 24th place (22:53), with Kristin Murphy in 35th (23:30). Also scoring for the team were Ellen Callahan (41st, 23:53) and Suzanne Chaves (56th, 25:25).
The B.A.A. Running Club will now look ahead to competing at the USATF National Club Cross Country Championships on December 12th in San Francisco, California.
